According to legend, Atlantis was a powerful island kingdom that used to lie in the Atlantic Ocean. Then one day, it sank. Archaeologists think a real island gave risk to this legend.

The Greek philosopher Plato described Atlantis more than 2,300 years ago. Long before that, he declared, Atlantis had been a great island empire. Its armies overran many Mediterranean lands but were defeated by Athens. Later, earthquakes and floods struck Atlantis, and it sank swiftly under the sea. Many people have believed that this story is true. Some thought that Atlantis was really America, the Canary Islands or the Bahamas.

In the 1960s, Greek archaeologists discovered that an ancient civilization had once flourished on a volcanic island known as Thera, or Santorini, in the Aegean Sea. In about 1450 BC, the volcano exploded, destroying the civilization. It is possible that Thera was Atlantis.
