Millstream, Western Australia

Lying off the Roebourne - Wittenoom road, Millestream's lovely deep pool wells from a natural spring and flows into the Fortescue River. Rimmed by lush vegetation and covered in parts by water-lilies, this oasis succours much wildlife, including a large colony of flying foxes. It is also a refuge for the rare and ancient nine kilometres along the banks of the Fortescue River. The palm's nearest relative is in Central Australia's Palm Valley and both plants are thought to be remnant of the period when inland areas had a tropical climate. More and more tourists are calling into Millstream, as this treasure of the north is in great danger of being flooded by a proposed dam.
